Norfolk Cetaceans – 26th March 2018
Last week a bone was found on Titchwell beach adjacent to the RSPB reserve. I’ve been able to inspect it today. The bone is the lower mandible of a SOWERBY’S BEAKED WHALE. It is probably a female given the tooth appears not to be fully erupted and it is perhaps from the animal that ‘dead stranded’ last July at Titchwell’s west beach. The cadaver subsequently relocated to the east beach and was covered by sand. Presumably the recent high tides and storms uncovered it; or at least part of it. The bone has a particular smell of decay so I know it’s not that old and the size fits nicely with last July’s female.
